West Coast Wildcats v Alberta

April 28, 2012

Part of the Men's traditional BC Cup we had the opportunity to showcase our Women at 1pm at Burnaby Lakes Rugby Fields.

We started off really well on an unfamiliar field, size and 18 a side and after we loaned Calgary 4 players as they were short. Marlena scored a great goal and we added a couple of behinds which had us up by 8 points at quarter time.

Perhaps Calgary were a little stunned that we were going to give them a real fight in the first quarter, as the last 3 quarters were much tighter. They tackled hard and had a few stars with decent skills although little up front to really worry the scoreboard. It was a very tight affair with many ball-ups and the ball was hard to get out of the packs. In the third quarter Calgary finally scored a goal through our own Alexa!  They then added a couple of behinds amongst a couple from us and the scores were tied in the last quarter.  For the last 5 minutes of the game the ball was stuck on our half forward line and Calgary did a great defensive job to keep us out from any score that would have won the game for us.  Even a shot on goal from Marlena at the end was smothered and the game finished in a tie.  Both coaches seemed happy with that. We are especially proud that all but one of our 25 girls that came out were Canadians.  We also fielded girls as young as 12 and as old as 50+ !!  A great mix of wonderful BC women!

It was great to have Calgary visit and enable our players to play for their province. Congrats to everyone for a job well done.

Final Score

West Coast Wildcats 1.4.10
Calgary 1.4.10
