American girls play by Aussie rules

AMERICA’S female Aussie Rules players couldn’t wait to swim at Manly Beach today, despite the cold.

The USA Freedom team, here for the International Cup, have been impressive on the field, beating an Australian Indigenous Multicultural team and PNG Flames. This afternoon they play Canada, at Auburn.

Manager Amy Bishop, who grew up in Sydney and moved to California six years ago, said a trip to the peninsula was always on the cards. “I knew the girls would love Manly,” she said. “It’s a beautiful place, with so much to offer.

“We’re staying in Kings Cross, so it didn’t take long to get here.”

The US men’s team, the Revolution, are also yet to taste defeat here. They are coached by Amy’s husband, Matt Bishop, who used to oversee the Manly Wolves reserve grade a few years ago.

The Revolution will play South Africa at ANZ Stadium on Sunday before the Swans take on St Kilda.

There are 1500 registered Aussie rules players and 35 clubs in the US.
