On a beautiful early autumn day the New York Magpies traveled to play the Boston Demons in Lexington, MA. Both sides had nine players who played every moment of two 20-minute halves. Despite the fact that each side fielded a number of inexperienced players - including a New Yorker who discovered footy just a week ago - both sides displayed impressive continuity and team play in front of the robust crowd that had turned up for the event.

Despite missing a number of key players, the Magpies got off to an early lead. Captain Andrea Casillas cleaned up the ball from the first center tap and kicked long and straight towards her side's full forward, only to have the ball travel all the way through the posts for a goal. The Magpies' Monica Robbins soon added another impressive long-range goal. But the Lady Demons kept their heads in the game and managed to equalize and a bit more by half with goals by Anna Belford, Aimee Hogue, and Emily Riehl.

In the second half, both sides continued to look strong, but a solid effort by the Demons' defense led by captain Jen Vogel converted a number of Magpie goal opportunities into behinds, allowing the Demons to pull away on the scoreboard.

Demons full forward Leslie Delaney had spent the day contending with a very impressive effort by the Magpies' rookie full back Rosie Richards, but in the final minutes her consistent good positioning paid off with a mark that she converted into the Demons' final goal.

Both sides are looking forward to representing the east coast at nationals in Austin. Thanks to the incredible effort by both teams' captains, the northeast is working toward developing a strong regional presence, which bodes well for the future of both clubs.
