How Long?:
This will be my second season playing footy.
Get Started:
I met Matty and Amy Bishop at a New Year's party a couple years ago and they told me, in the most adorable accents, about this fantastic game that made absolutely no sense whatsoever. That spring I joined the Sacramento Australian Rules Football Club's recreation league and fell in love with the sport.
First Game:
My first full contact game was exciting and frightening. A group of about six Sacramento girls traveled to Denver to play in a tournament. Since we didn't have enough to field a full team we played with the Arizona Lady Hawks. I remember forgetting my mouth guard at home and having to run at the last minute to Target to get a new one. It really didn't work out so well trying to mold it with the hot water in the hotel breakfast area. I occasionally gagged on the field the whole time. It was a sharp learning curve on the field but the women on both teams were incredibly supportive and helpful. I felt I had improved so much in one game and just wanted to do better.
Describe Game:
I describe the game as the most ridiculous sport. Its like rugby, soccer, and football, but not really, and you get to tackle people.
5 Words:
The first thing that came to mind was "the men wear tiny shorts" but I don't think that's what you're looking for lol. It's just a bonus. How about "Anything less would be uncivilized." Ok, seriously now. I play footy because... its everything great about sport. Its rough, challenging, frustrating, exciting, and worth all the bumps and bruises.
