About Us

The Orange County Bombshells are the first women's Australian Football team in the United States and are the women's side of the Orange County Bombers Australian Football Team

History

The Bombshells were formed in August of 2003. Four women including Leigh Swansborough, Helen Mondia, and Danica Lisiewicz had recently been playing in CAFL Metro League games with the boys. A post from another woman was made on the USAFL website inquiring about women playing aussie rules in the US. One thing lead to another and it was decided to try and get a women's game at the USAFL championships. Women were recruited from southern California, Sacramento, and even Minnesota. None of the women other than Leigh had played footy before. Some of the women have significant others playing for the Orange County Bombers, some had no team sports experience, and others played sports such as Gaelic Football, Ultimate, or soccer. Leigh and Mini tirelessly ran training sessions at various locations. There were only a couple of practices with the whole team in attendance.

We played an all-comers team at the 2003 United States Australian Football League (USAFL) championships in Kansas City Missouri. This was the first ever women's game of aussie rules in the United States.
