Great Southern Footy Challenge Day 1

4 teams from around the country met in the first day of the Great Southern Women's Footy Challenge.  In the first hit out of the year for most players saw Atlanta play host to Arizona/Denver/Baltimore-Washington, Milwaukee, and New York.

The day started off with a training session for the US Freedom.  After running two miles and doing skills tests, the players had to strap on their boots for two games.

Game 1: Milwaukee vs Arizona/Denver/Baltimore-Wash

Following the USAFL tournament format of 20 minute halves, the Milwaukee Bombers took the field in the first game   The Bombers hit the goal posts early with Jenny Sarbacker hitting a freak goal that rolled for about 20 yards in the pocket.  It somehow had followed the boundary line and then veered towards the goal.  Arizona scored a couple of goals to take a lead.  The Milwaukee players started finding their targets and improving their team work to run out winners by 21 points.

Game 2: Atlanta vs New York

Game 3: Atlanta vs Milwaukee

In the first game of the afternoon, the two winners from the morning round met to see who would finish the first day undefeated.  It looked to be business as usual as Atlanta got on the scoreboard first with a goal and a behind.

Milwaukee picked up the pace and picked up their skills and team work.  The first half saw Milwaukee with the greater share of possesions in the offensive zone and accurate kicking for goal.

The first half ended with a Milwaukee flurry of scores to take the half at 30 points.

In the second half, Altanta adjusted their defence and both teams were able to get into the forward zone but found difficulty getting clean shots at goal. Milwaukee increased their lead with scores from Suzi Thomas and Jenny Sarbacker before yielding a 2nd goal right before the final siren,

Day 2 lookahead

Milwaukee has locked up a spot in the final by going 2-0.  The two 1-1 teams, Arizona and Atlanta have the first game of the morning with the winner going to the final.

It should be another great day of footy!
