Orange County Bombshells

About Us

The Orange County Bombshells are the first womens Australian Football team in the United States and are the women's side of the Orange County Bombers Australian Football Team. We played an all-comers team at the 2003 United States Australian Football League (USAFL) championships in Kansas City Missouri. This was the first ever women's game of aussie rules in the United States. We enter a second team, Valley Vandolls, in the CAFL Women's League.

Full Game Report, Photos, & Video Highlights

The Bombshells were formed in August of 2003. Four women including Leigh Swansborough, Helen Mondia, and Danica Lisiewicz had recently been playing in CAFL Metro League games with the boys. A post from another woman was made on the USFooty website inquiring about women playing aussie rules in the US. One thing lead to another and it was decided to try and get a women's game at the USAFL championships. Women were recruited from southern California, Sacramento, and even Minnesota. None of the women other than Leigh had played footy before. Some of the women have significant others playing for the Orange County Bombers, some had no team sports experience, and others played sports such as Gaelic Football, Ultimate, or soccer. Leigh and Mini tirelessly ran training sessions at various locations. There were only a couple of practices with the whole team (not including the Minnesota player) in attendence.

Come and Play

We are actively recruiting new players. No experience is necessary and we currently have players ranging in age from 14 to 40's. Contact Mary Votava for more info.

Women's Footy and Extreme Dodgeball

Following on the success of the 2004 movie, Dodgeball, starring Ben Stiller, Dodgeball leagues have been cropping up all over the country. The Game Show Network has capitalized on this and created a show called Extreme Dodgeball. While preparing for their 2005 season, the producers put the call out for Women's Footy players to try their stuff in the Dodgeball arena.

Kelly Lovato of the Bombshells took on the challenge and tried out. Her footy and softball skills came in mighty handy and she made the cut!

by Leigh Swansborough

Five months ago Mini and I were kicking the footy at Balboa Park in Encino. It was there that we met Tera othewise known as T-Blu. With a cigarette in one hand and a soda can to mark her spot "T" was manning the outfield for her softball team. read more »
