The Minnesota Freeze Womens Australian Football team was established in 2004 and is looking to grow in 2011. Along with the Minnesota Freeze men's club, we co-founded the Minnesota Australian Football Council to foster the development of Australian Football in our state.

Practices and Clinics

Minnesota Women's Footy practices are at 6pm Mondays at the Lake Calhoun softball field in Minneapolis.

Check this page or email kjh@womensfooty.com for updates. All you need to bring is cleats, water, a light & dark shirt, and hopefully some friends (of any gender). Expect to have a blast! New players are always welcome and anyone can play regardless of age, shape, gender, athletic abilities, or anything else.

What is Australian Football?

Australian Football is a fast paced exciting game that is played with a ball similar in shape but slightly larger than an American football. It combines elements of soccer, basketball, ultimate, lacrosse, and even volleyball. Points are scored by kicking the ball between goal posts at either end of the field. The ball is advanced by hand passing or kicking. Hand passes are similar to an underhand serve in volleyball and the kicks are similar to punts in American football. Unlike soccer you can catch, grab, or pick up a ball. Some of the most exciting and elegant plays occur when players are catching balls kicked to them. Unlike most other ball sports, Australian Football is played with the ball in the air which makes it exciting to play or watch and leads to the fast paced, high scoring nature of the game. The photos of the first women's game  will give you an idea of the game.

Come and Play

We are actively recruiting new players. No experience is necessary and all ages, shapes, and athletic abilities are welcome! Email Kathryn Hogg if you are interested in playing with us or supporting us in some other way. Please send your email address so we can keep you in touch! We will be establishing a local metro league. For those who so desire, we will be preparing for the women's national championships later this year. The 2012 USAFL Championships are in Mason, OH in October!!!!
